Calling the Kettle
I’m happy to say that we are seeing the demise of the open aired kitchen. I personally have never been a fan of the open homescape. I prefer places I can retreat to without the din, olfactory, or public areas that millenials so seemed to indulge. I think there is something to say for the formal dining room and what it means to break bread in a more intimate setting. I like the addition of the “hang out” room to the kitchen because although I do love a kitchen congregation, sometimes you just want some space to do what it was designed to do—cook.
I think my most favorite trend happening in kitchens right now is the use of black. I feel like the absence of color for some people is a bit too “moody” throughout the house, but black in the kitchen denotes a type of elegance and class that looks and feels elegant and modern.
I’m seeing more black cabinetry which mixes well with different types of hardware and textures. I love the way it contrasts with warm wood textures or cool matte and glossy finishes. You can mix and match islands and cabinets, or go for a black floor or wall to make a statement. I’m also a fan of black appliances that have standalone presence. Just as in fashion, black goes well with almost everything and a black inspired kitchen makes something a bit different!
