One of the best things about being Latin is the music. From the tango to the cha cha, the rhythms of the Latin beat go strong as to why dancing is like breathing to us. RVA has always had a vibrant music scene and there is no exception when speaking about our Latin movers and shakers. Although, traditional Latin music covers a broad spectrum of styles per country, we wanted to give you some quick examples.

Angelica Garcia

Influenced by her Mexican and Salvadorian roots and culture, Angelica Garcia belts out poetry infused lyrics with raw and passionate voice.

Kevin Davis & Ban Caribe

This list would not be complete without listing this entourage of talented musicians. Kevin has brought “Latin Soul” to Richmond since 2014. With his band he mixes Afro-Cuban, Latin, Caribbean accompanied by traditional R&B for a unique combo.

Bio Ritmo

The renowned Salsa Kings and Queens of RVA, NY, hell everywhere. From the first hit of the drum, there is no doubt you will be on the dance floor salsaing the night away. Bio Ritmo has been a musical force in Richmond since the early 90’s and their talent is barnone. We HIGHLY recommend attending one of their rhythmic shows.

Ramona Martinez and the Holy Smokes

I saw this chica play with her band at Hardywood and just fell in love with her. She’s not a Richmonder, but this Charlottesville denizen plays RVA quite often. Showcasing old Country Western/Honky Tonk, Ramona sings heartfelt tunes in English and Spanish pulling from her Tejano roots.

Miramar

If you want to fall in love, go see Miramar. Crooners Rei Alvarez (Bio Ritmo) and Laura Ann Singh (Quatro na Bossa) along with keys player and Bio Ritmo leader, Marlysse Simmons Argandoña create a romantic atmosphere showcasing traditional bolero music that will leave your heart swooning.

Friday Love

This solo artist hailing from NY and landing in RVA brings a soulful style fusing R&B, Soul, and Neo-Soul mixed with Latin flavor, making her someone you want to see on the stage. Her presence is undeniable. You can find her hosting our annual Rhythm on the River event.

Paulo Franco

Colombiano Paulo Franco brings his Latin roots to rock n’ roll riffs and covers a wide spectrum of styles. He leads his band, Los Hermanos Alacranes and has opened for Los Lobos among others. A talented singer and guitar player, Paulo brings American and Latin music together with such ease.
